These are some of the books I teach out of. Don’t go buy them all right now. Look below and see which books are appropriate for your student. If you are unsure, you can wait until after the first lesson and I will assign books specifically.
Arban: Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet
There are several editions of this book. My favorites are the Claude Gordon edition and the Tom Hooten edition. It is usually $30-40. I use this for all high schoolers and advanced middle schoolers.
Arnold - Masterworks for Trumpet
I use this one for high schoolers. I’ll let you know if you need to get this one. It isn’t available on Amazon all the time, but Penders always has it. It is about $10. https://www.penders.com/p-31890-masterworks-for-trumpet.aspx
Clarke - Technical Studies for Cornet
I use this for all middle schoolers and high schoolers. I use two pages for beginners, which will be attached at the bottom of this document. I would like all middle school and high school students to bring this book to lessons each week. I’ve seen this book anywhere from $8 to $20. It is also available for free online, but I personally think it is worth it to just have the book instead of a bunch of loose pages.
Getchel - First book of Practical Studies
I use this for all beginners starting anywhere after about the 4th week.
Walter Beeler - Method for the Cornet (book 1)
I use this with beginners. Book 1 has the words “Walter Beeler” in a pinkish-red color. Book two has them in blue. This is about $12 on amazon.
Each student is unique and may need a book that is not on this list. I’ll let you know.
Fundamentals Packet:
Please print this entire packet and have your student bring it to every lesson in a three ring binder. Bonus points if you have those protective plastic sleeves!
This packet has scales, flow studies, some Clarke studies, range expansion, and lip slurs.

Listening is the MOST important thing in becoming a great musician/trumpet player! It is important to learn the literature, but also just to impress in the mind what the trumpet can sound like! For this reason, the more music (and especially trumpet music) you can introduce your student to, the better! Many famous trumpet artists have recordings on YouTube. Other times, it is only possible to hear the music by buying the album on iTunes or getting the physical CD.
Here are some great albums to start with:
Alison Balsom - Legende
Tom Hooten - Trumpet Call
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Wayne Bergeron - Plays Well With Others
John Holt - Facets 2, or Trumpet Panoply
Jason Bergman - The Lightning Fields
Matthias Hofs - Trumpet Acrobatics
Wynton Marsalis - Carnaval
Hakan Hardenberger - Famous Classical Trumpet Concertos
Anything by:
The Canadian Brass
Empire Brass
German Brass
Doc Severinson
Allen Vizzutti
There are hundreds of fantastic trumpeters and the more exposure students can get to them, the better!
