Daniel Wilson Studio Syllabus, Contract, and Other Housekeeping

Dear All,

Thank you for your interest in studying with me this year. I really enjoy teaching and it’s all because of the wonderful students I get to work with!

Below you will find the answers to many questions that you may have as well as a list of materials I use and some guidelines to make the student/teacher/parent relationship work as smoothly as possible.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! My schedule is busy and sporadic, so the best way to get in touch with me is through email. I do my best to return any emails within 24 hours. For emergencies, you can call or text me.

Contract

By signing up for lessons you are agreeing:

For the student to attend lessons each week.

To communicate any schedule conflicts in a timely manner.

To pay for each lesson on time.

To encourage the student to practice at least 30 minutes each day. (15 for beginners)

To encourage the student to practice efficiently and effectively.

To procure any extra books or CDs within reason in a timely manner.

To communicate any questions or concerns.

Lessons

Regular lessons are defined as one-on-one work between the teacher and the student. We will work on fundamentals of trumpet playing, technical studies, scales, etudes, solos, and many other things. We will work on band music if it is necessary. Occasionally the

Lesson Times

Lessons are 30 minutes or an hour long. During the school day, an “hour” is defined as the length of the period. That means that if the class period is 53 minutes, then the “1 hour” lesson will actually be 53 minutes and the “30 minute” lesson will actually be 26.5 minutes.

Lesson Payment

I LOVE teaching lessons so much that I would probably do it for free if I could. Unfortunately, I don’t have a trust fund and my electric bills are due every month just like a normal person. For that reason, it is really important that you pay me on time each month and that you communicate any issues you may have beforehand.

Payment is due on the first of each month for the whole month. If your lesson is on a Tuesday, you will pay for all the Tuesdays in that month unless there is a school function on one of them.

Payment can be made through MyMusicStaff.com. I’m using this site for the first time this year so that I can spend more time teaching and less time sending out individual invoices! I’ll give more detailed instructions once I’m more familiar with the website.

Payment can also be made with cash or check. Keep in mind that I usually do not carry change, so cash payments should be for the exact amount.

Some students may be on scholarship through band boosters or otherwise. If this is the case, you are still responsible to pay your portion of the fee on the first of each month. The rest will be worked out through the scholarship donors and you do not need to worry about that.

If you have trouble paying on the first for any reason, I don’t mind working with you and finding something that works, but it is your responsibility to communicate the issue beforehand.

Lesson Conflicts and Cancellations

I have access to the band schedules as well as the school master calendar, so I should be aware of most of the conflicts with lessons. You will not be charged when lessons are cancelled due to school events. Note: although I have access to the school and band calendars, I’m still human and I make mistakes sometimes. If you see that you’ve been charged incorrectly, please let me know ASAP so I can fix it!

I DO NOT have the time to check the calendars for every student’s other extracurricular activities. If your student has to miss a lesson for a Latin competition, choir, track meet, SAT tests, or anything that is not related to band, you must let me know 48 hours in advance. Failure to give me 48 hours will result in you still being billed for the lesson. Although 48 hours is the minimum notice, two weeks in advance is even better!

If 48 hours notice is given, that lesson will be credited toward the next month’s payment.

In the case of sickness or other emergency, 48 hours is not necessary, but please let me know as quickly as possible. If I do not know about the absence until the lesson is supposed to start, I reserve the right to bill you for

If I have to cancel a lesson for any reason and you have already paid for it, that lesson will be credited to the next month. The other possibility is to schedule a make-up lesson on another day or at another time.

Please Print this entire packet and have your student bring it to every lesson in a three ring binder. Bonus points if they have the pages in those protective plastic sleeves!
